Wash Care for Bed Linen

How to Wash

Bed linen is best washed on a gentle cycle or even hand washed with a gentle soap. We recommend that all bed linen be separated into light or dark colours as washing them together may ruin both. Bath linen should be washed at a maximum of 40° Celsius as shrinkage or discoloration of a print may occur if the water is too hot.

Use the extra rinse cycle if available in order to remove any detergent residue. Soft water is important as hard water can cause a soap scum to form that makes the fabric hard and discolored. Linen is very absorbent therefore plenty of fresh water is required.

Contrary to popular belief, Zen Collective bed linen should not be boil washed, especially since detergents achieve excellent results at low temperatures.

How Often to Wash

To keep bed linen looking their best, they should be laundered every five to six days. Leaving it longer may cause discoloration, especially with white linens. Bed Linen gets better the more it is washed. It becomes softer, smoother, looks shinier and feels so much nicer.

About Soap & Detergent

Select only a non-biological detergent containing no optical whiteners, bleaching agents or enzymes that cause color fading and also damage fabrics. When hand washing, dont place the detergent directly, ensure liquids are dispersed and powders completely dissolved before immersing the items to be washed. For whites, detergents that contain mild bleach may only be used. Use oxygen bleaches, chlorine bleaches cause the fabric to yellow. Bleaches are best avoided.

Drying

Line drying is ideal for leaving your laundry outdoor-fresh and almost crease-free, but using a tumble dryer at the correct setting also gives good results. When using a tumble dryer, do not over dry laundry and remove it promptly to reduce creasing. Smooth out and reshape everything, paying particular attention to borders on bed linens, then fold carefully.

Ironing

Natural fibers crease more when new, but with time the fabric softens. Iron bed linens whilst still slightly damp, using a steam iron. In the event that linens have become dry, re-dampen with a water spray before ironing. To give a crisp finish, use spray starch when ironing. Always iron the corners of pillowcases from the outside inwards to avoid creasing. For embroidered or embellished items, iron this area on the reverse to enhance and protect it.

Fight Stains

Ketchup - Do not rub a blob of ketchup that has stained. Soak in cold water without rubbing to loosen the ketchup, scrape the excess ketchup, jet spray some cold water from the back. Rub few drops of white vinegar in a circular motion with sponge. Rinse out the cleaner.

Pomegranate - Wash the garment in fresh water. Soak it in detergent for 2-3 hours. Take the cloth out and scrub the stained portion with a plastic brush. Rinse the cloth in fresh water.

Nail Polish - Put the reverse side of the fabric on white absorbent cloth and apply nail polish remover on the stain. Replace the absorbent cloth frequently. Rinse and wash in detergent solution.

Lipstick - Apply detergent paste on the stain for 2-3 hours. Then rub vigorously on the stained portion with a plastic brush. Rinse thoroughly in fresh water. Repeat the above procedure 2-3 times. Finally rinse in fresh water and dry in sunlight.

Cooking Oil - Dab the spot with blotting paper. Rub some talcum powder on it. Brush off the talcum powder. Apply detergent paste on the spot. After a while rinse in hot water.

Pencil - Use a soft eraser to remove the excess lead. While doing so just be careful to not damage or stretch the fabric too much. Next, wash in detergent solution.

Ball Point Ink - Hold stain against a towel, spray closely from behind with hair spray.

Other Beverages - Soak in cold water. Rewash with stain remover. Wash using oxy bleach (only for white linen).

Wash Care for Duvets & Comforters

How to Wash

Duvets and comforters with Down Alternative fill and a pure cotton lining are best washed on a gentle cycle to avoid shrinking and color fading. Use cold water at a maximum temperature of 40 degrees to prevent any fabric damage.

Use the extra rinse cycle if available in order to remove any detergent residue. Use less detergent than usual. Soft water is important as hard water can cause a soap scum to form that makes the fabric hard and discolored.

How Often to Wash

Duvets and comforters with Down Alternative fill can be easily washed at home every 2 to 3 months.

Stains can be treated on a weekly basis and it is recommended to place the duvet or comforter under sun light at least once a week. For better up-keep, use duvet covers that can be washed at more regular intervals.

About Soap & Detergent

Select only a non-biological detergent containing no optical whiteners, bleaching agents or enzymes that cause color fading and also damage fabrics. Fabric softeners or white vinegar can be used during wash cycle to maintain softness. Pre-treat stains before washing using enzyme-based stain removers.

When hand washing, don't place the detergent directly, ensure liquids are dispersed and powders completely dissolved before immersing the items to be washed.

Drying

Line drying is ideal for reducing crease and prolonging your duvet/comforter's plushness, however, it can take 2-5 days depending on the weather of your surroundings. Using a tumble dryer at the correct setting also gives good results.

When using a tumble dryer, do not over load the dryer and use a large capacity dryer with enough empty space for easy movement of the duvet/comforter. Tumble dry on gentle cycle at low temperatures. Use dryer balls to maintain even fluff of the filling. You can also use clean tennis balls wrapped in a pair of socks and drop them into the dryer during the drying cycle.

Fight Stains

Removing stains on a weekly basis is ideal. Pre-treat stains before washing with enzyme-based stain remover. Let the stain remover sit for 20 minutes then gently rub the area with a soft-bristled brush. A damp cloth can also be used by gentling patting it on the applied stain remover. Then rinse the area with warm water.

It is advisable to then let the duvet/comforter be placed in sun light for sometime.

How to Store

When storing, use a breathable cotton or fabric storage bag to allow air circulation. Your Zen Collective duvets and comforters come pre-packed in a sturdy cloth bag made from recycled cotton. Avoid plastic bags as they can trap moisture.

Give the duvet/comforter a good shake periodically to help redistribute the filling and keep it evenly spread.

Wash Care for Bath Linen

How to Wash

Aside from using warm water for coloured products or hot water for white products, you should wash your towels on a normal (regular) or gentle cycle or a towel cycle if available. You can also wash them on a sanitizing cycle, but this setting is probably best for every few washes rather than every wash. To keep the products looking great, long-lasting and soft, wash them at around 30° Celsius. In case of tufted-pile rugs, use gentle cycle with cold water and do not dry clean.

Fibre shedding is a natural process, but that doesn't mean you can't slow it down. Don't overload your washing machine, only half-fill it while washing. This reduces the friction and results in lower fibre shedding.

We also recommend washing before first use.

How Often to Wash

Wash your towels & bathrobe when they are dirty. For a hand towel in a busy bathroom, you'll probably want to change it every day or so. Whereas for a bath towel you're using after a daily bath or shower, every 4 to 5 days is probably enough. Tufted-pile rugs can be washed once every two weeks.

We'd recommend you keep two or three sets of towels so you always have a few spares, ready for wash day.

About Soap & Detergent

Select only a non-biological detergent containing no optical whiteners, bleaching agents or enzymes that cause color fading and also damage fabrics. Please note that some bathroom cleaning products and beauty products may also contain bleaching agents that can stain your towels or bathrobes. Washing gels or detergents specially formulated are recommended for all coloured products, including light colours. For pure whites, you can stick to powders.

Using fabric softener may be the answer to the age old question of how to increase softness, but the answer is not what you’d expect. Fabric conditioner coats the fibres and actually reduces absorbency. A build-up of fabric conditioner over time will eventually make the products feel hard and scratchy - which is the opposite of the effect you want to achieve.

Do not use bleach on tufted-pile rugs. Pre-treat stains with stain remover.

Drying

To keep the products soft and fluffy, we would advise to tumble dry them. The heat will help add some extra bounce to the pile weave. When using a tumble dryer, to keep them feeling soft, we recommend leaving them slightly damp and then line dry them before storing.

A great, eco-friendly way to dry your towels & bathrobes is to line dry your towels straight from the washing machine.

Second Chance

Towels & bathrobes are a staple in any household. With the arrival of your brand new Zen Collective product, instead of throwing away the old ones, consider giving them a second life. There are plenty of ways to recycle and keep them out of the landfills : turn them into bath mats, picnic blankets, pet beds, dish towels, oven mitts or cleaning rags.
